A enthralling rubber match will serve as the final match of the opening day of the WTA Finals in Singapore, as fellow Grand Slam finalists Simona Halep and Eugenie Bouchard meet to settle the score in their latest encounter. Having split their previous two matches, this marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and will likely be a captivating and competitive three set battle.
Romania’s Simona Halep may be coming off a poor conclusion to her US Open run, but that has not stopped her from compiling a career-best season on the tour. Halep achieved some of her best performances this year when she reached the quarter-final of the Australian Open, the final of the French open and the semi-final round of the Wimbledon Championships. She also won two titles this season at Doha and Bucharest, which has prompted her to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore. She will look to regain her top form ahead of the year-end championship in October.
Following a surprisingly poor US Open run given her consistency at the Majors, Eugenie Bouchard found her form in Wuhan at the start of the Asian Swing, where she reached the final of the tournament and even earned one of her best wins in months when she defeated Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets. However, she would be unable to maintain that momentum, as she lost her Beijing opener to Sabine Lisicki and her second round match at Linz to Tsvetana Pironkova.
While it is understandable that WTA stars are tired by the end of the season, Bouchard is motivated to perform at her first ever WTA Finals.
Halep and Bouchard split their previous two meetings on the tour – Halep won their maiden encounter at Indian Wells, while the Canadian avenged the loss en route to her first ever Grand Slam final at Wimbledon. With an opportunity to close out the season as the year-end champion, both athletes will be motivated to produce the necessary performance.
Prediction: Simona Halep in Three Sets
