After producing some of the most remarkable tennis played at the prestigious year-end championships, Simona Halep will look to further her bid at the WTA Finals with a solid performance against her third and final round robin opponent, Ana Ivanovic. While already guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals, Halep will also look to take the lead in this series’ rubber match, as the two competitors split their first two meetings on the tour. Check out the Halep v Ivanovic Head to Head.
In one of the most surprising results on the tournament to date, Simona Halep snapped Serena Williams’ 16-match winning streak at the WTA Finals with a 6-0, 6-2 thrashing on Wednesday afternoon. The first set, in particular, was a beatdown, as Williams was bageled and only managed to win seven points throughout the entire set.
It was Williams’ worst defeat since a 1998 loss to Joannette Kruger in Oklahoma City.
“It’s the biggest match in my life, so I can’t put into words how I feel right now. I feel very happy! I just want to enjoy it,” Halep said. “It was always my dream to beat one of the Williams sisters, but of course without the help of the crowd I wouldn’t have been able to play this way today.
“Also my team, my Romanians, I feel so amazing right now! I will work hard for the rest of the tournament and then we will party for sure!”
Also victorious in style, Ana Ivanovic avenged her recent losses to Eugenie Bouchard with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 showing against the Canadian. The Serb won 81% of her first service points, saved 6 of 7 break points she faced and won 60% of the total points played in the match.
Having lost her opening match to Williams, Ivanovic’s win against Bouchard kept her in the running for a spot in the semi-final round.
“This is the beauty of the round robin system. I really tried to come out here and just enjoy the match,” Ivanovic said. “I’d lost to her twice before, so today I tried to be aggressive and step in. I did this well and I’m really pleased with how I played.”
This contest will serve as the rubber match between the two competitors, as they split the head-to-head series 1-1 over the past 12 months. Halep has been an unstoppable force in Singapore and will look to further that momentum with a strong showing against the Serb.
