After splitting matches in the first quarter of 2014, Simona Halep and Agnieszka Radwanska will meet for a third time this season to settle the score in a rubber match in the semi-final stage of the WTA Finals. Both competitors reached the final four with a pair of victories in the round robin stage of the event but lost their final match on Friday afternoon. Of their six previous encounters on the circuit, Radwanska leads the head-to-head series 4-2.
After prevailing in her first two matches with relative ease, including a 6-0, 6-2 thrashing of top seed Serena Williams to hand her her worst beatdown in the last 16 years, Halep was unable to remain undefeated in Singapore and lost her final match in a thrilling three set battle to Ana Ivanovic. Unfortunately for Ivanovic, her inability to close out the match in straight sets allowed Williams to advance to the semi-final round of the tournament.
Earlier in the day, Agnieszka Radwanska lost her final match of the round robin stage to Maria Sharapova, yet still reached the semi-final stage of the events having won more games and sets than her Russian adversary. The contest lasted a total of 3 hours and 9 minutes and saw a thrilling encounter before the final score of 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-2 for Maria.
However, Aga will have Caroline Wozniacki to thank for her arrival at the semi-final round.
“Yeah, we talked. When I saw her yesterday, she was already saying, ‘I know, I know.’ She knew what was going on and that she could help me if she won,” Radwanska said. “She wasn’t surprised that I would be supporting her.”
“I think we’re just going to go shopping, but with my credit card!”
This marks the seventh time that these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Radwanska leading the series 4-2. The Pole also won their most recent encounter in the Indian Wells semi-final, yet will be faced with a more intimidating and motivated Halep this time around.
Prediction: Simona Halep in Three Sets
