After staying out of each other’s paths for the better part of two years, top seed Serena Williams and Australia’s Samantha Stosur will meet for the third time in the 2014 season on Friday afternoon in Beijing. Their most recent meeting in Cincinnati was one of the best in their entire series and adds to the intrigue of the upcoming clash. The Williams vs Stosur Head to Head is poised at 8-3 with Sam not having defeated Williams since winning her only Major title at the 2011 US Open.
It was certainly not her best performance this week, but Serena Williams managed to escape a staggering upset on Thursday afternoon when she defeated Lucie Safarova 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 to reach the quarter-final round in Beijing. Williams struck 11 aces, won 69% of her first serve points and saved 6 of 9 break points against her to finish off the match in 1 hour and 29 minutes.
Her opponent, Samantha Stosur, had a smoother entry to the final eight of the tournament, as she defeated Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday afternoon. The Australian won 76% of her first service points and converted 5 of 7 break points to secure the win in 74 minutes.
This marks the twelfth time that these two competitors will meet on the WTA tour, with Williams leading the series 8-3. The American is also 7-2 on hard court matches and has not lost to Stosur since the 2011 US Open final. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, this should be a relatively straightforward match for Williams, but could feature some of the best tennis played this week on both ends.
Prediction: Serena Williams in Straight Sets
