Following another straight sets victory in Beijing, Serena Williams has arrived at the third round of the tournament, where she will meet Lucie Safarova for the eighth time on the WTA Tour. The American holds an impenetrable 7-0 record against Safarova that stretches back to their first meeting in 2007.
While Williams had been forced to contest three-set battles with Tsvetana Pironkova in both their previous encounters, Williams was not prepared to waste any extra time on court. The world No. 1 defeated her Bulgarian adversary 6-2, 6-3 in a contest that lasted a total of 72 minutes.
“Tonight I was aware that I wanted to start out strong, and I think that was the main difference,” Williams, who lost the first five games of her first round match here, commented. “I was just trying to make sure I was able to win a game early on.”
Her next opponent is thirteenth seed Lucie Safarova, who defeated Mona Barthel 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hour and 18 minutes. The Czech native won 73% of her first service point and saved all 10 of the break points she faced on serve to cement her spot in the third round of the tournament.
While Safarova has had all of seven chances to find her first win against Williams, she appears to be getting no closer to such a win, as she has not managed a set against the top seed since the 2011 Rogers Cup in Toronto – an encounter she still lost after leading 6-4 in the opening set. Given the American’s imposing performances over the past couple of days, it is unlikely that Safarova will find that victory this time around either.
