Former US Open champion Sam Stosur has never won a tournament more than once – except for the Japan Women’s Open Tennis Championships, which she has now lifted a grand total of three times during her storied career.
Standing in Stosur’s quest for a third title at this international event was two consecutive matches with WTA Rising Stars, first against Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals, and then against Zarina Diyas in the final the following day.
The contest itself was a messy affair, as Stosur gave up quite a few opportunities to lead in the match before eventually edging Diyas in an opening set tiebreak. She would find a break of serve in the second set, which relieved some of the pressure on her shoulders and set her on the path to close out the match 7-6, 6-3.
The win marks Stosur’s first title of the season, and her sixth overall WTA career title.
Diyas was also the third first-time WTA finalist this week, following in the footsteps of Alison Riske and Belinda Bencic in Tianjin. She will continue her season at the WTA Rising Stars Invitational, where takes place alongside the WTA Finals in Singapore.
