After a surprisingly grueling opening encounter at the Paris Bercy, world No. 2 Roger Federer will meet another Frenchman en route to the quarter-final in qualifier Lucas Pouille. This marks the first time that these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, and promises to be a compelling match-up for the partisan crowd in Paris.
Watch the match here: Federer vs Pouille
After compiling a remarkable win streak late in the season – a campaign that included two consecutive titles in Shanghai and Basel – 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer continued his winning ways on Wednesday afternoon. The Swiss star withstood a surprisingly difficult challenge from Jeremy Chardy to defeat the Frenchman 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-4 and reach the third round in Paris.
Federer’s next opponent is qualifier Lucas Pouille, who followed up on his upset of Ivo Karlovic with another strong showing against Fabio Fognini. To the delight of the crowd, Pouille defeated the 16th seed 7-6(5), 7-6(7).
It is always interesting to see a feel-good story like Lucas Pouille blossom during Masters 1000 events – particularly on home soil. However, he may have reached the final chapter of the fairytale story, as his next match-up is a supremely difficult encounter against the world No. 2. While he may put forth a valiant effort, it is hard to imagine him toppling the Swiss star.
