Refreshed from a short vacation following the Davis Cup, 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer will begin his final stretch of the season at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, where he will meet Leonardo Mayer for the first time on the ATP World Tour.
Following a short downtime period after his solid showing at the Davis Cup, Roger Federer is rejuvenated and ready to compete in the final handful of tournaments in the season. Having already qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Federer is simply looking for a big finish to his 2014 season.
While he is not looking that far ahead at the moment, Federer admits that he is motivated to win the Shanghai Rolex Masters for the first time in his career.
“Of course, the wish is to win the tournament here,” said Federer. “I’ve never been able to win it other than the Masters Cup here, but never when it was a Masters 1000. That is the goal, no doubt about it. I feel my game is good enough now, but the field is very strong. Tough draws for all the top guys. A lot of guys are fighting to get into the race for the World Tour Finals in London, so there’s a lot of pressure on many of the guys.
The Swiss star will open his campaign in Shanghai with a second round encounter against Leonardo Mayer. The Argentine topped Chinese Wildcard entrant Di Wu 6-4, 6-1 in the final match on Stadium court. Mayer hit 6 aces, won 97 percent of his first service points and saved all four of the break points he faced on serve.
This marks the first time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional circuit and will undoubtedly be a contest that heavily favors Federer. The Swiss star is a veteran at this event and will be looking to culminate his season with strong showings in his final handful of tournaments.
