Following a fantastic week in Asia, 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer finally managed to claim the elusive Shanghai Rolex Masters title with a straight sets victory over Gilles Simon.
Federer, who defeated Simon 7-6(6), 7-6(2), became the first player since Andre Agassi to regain the NO. 2 ranking at age 33. This marks Federer’s fourth title of the season, and his second Masters 1000 title of the year after he won the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati in August.
“I feel unbelievable prestige to win this event. Especially putting my hands on the trophy for the first time is a good feeling, I must say. I’m very happy with the way I’m playing. Overall I’m just extremely happy right now.”
World No. 51 Gilles Muller is coming off three consecutive second round appearances – at Metz, Shenzhen and Tokyo. He holds a 6-5 record on the ATP World Tour this season and will be keep to push himself back into the Top 50 in the rankings.
This is the fifth time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Federer leading the series 4-0. They most recently met at the second round of the Wimbledon championships, where Federer raced past his opponent en route to the third round. Once again, Federer will likely be faced with little resistance against Muller.
