For the first time in over a decade, Rafael Nadal returned to Basel, Switzerland to compete at the Swiss Indoor tournament. He managed to pick up his first ever victory at the event with a straight sets win against Italian qualifier Simone Bolelli.
The second seed defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-2, firing 3 aces and winning 71 percent of his first service points to close out the match in 71 minutes.
“This was a very important victory for me,” said Nadal. “I played a good match, a solid one. I played with not many mistakes.”
The Spaniard was diagnosed with the early stages of appendicitis, to which he opted to undergo an aggressive antibiotics treatment instead of immediate surgery. He is yet to decide on when he will end his season.
Following his lackluster showing since returning to professional competition, where he lost to Feliciano Lopes in the second round of the Shanghai Masters, Nadal admits that this was a necessary victory and an important step towards his recovery.
“The important goal for me is to try my best in the next round,” added Nadal, “and to enjoy every minute on court and the love of the fans. To enjoy tennis and enjoy the tournament.”
