For the second time this season, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova will cross paths on the WTA Tour. Their most recent meeting took place at the Miami Masters in March, with a two-year gap separating that from their earlier encounters. Their most famous meeting took place in the Wimbledon final back in 2011, which marked Kvitova’s first ever Grand Slam title, and just one of two victories she has managed to date against the Russian superstar. Sharapova leads the overall head to head series 5-2.
Undefeated since the US Open, Petra Kvitova picked up her eighth straight consecutive win on Saturday evening when she defeated Sam Stosur in an entertaining three-setter 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. While Stosur had laser-sharp vision and pinpoint accuracy in the second set, she was unable to maintain that level of play and ultimately surrendered the match in the deciding set.
“It’s tough to say something about the match. I mean, it was really up and down. In the second set she was the better player on the court,” Kvitova said. “I’m just glad I could win it in the third. I knew how Samantha can play really well, and she played a really amazing second set. I was a little bit worried in the third set, like if she continued playing that way, it could have been a pretty quick one.
“But I had some chances and I did it. In the end I served well, and that was important.”
Now in search for her fourth WTA title this season, Kvitova will meet Maria Sharapova in the final of the China Open on Sunday. The Russian star was not playing games in her semi-final, as she exacted revenge on Ivanovic by winning the first seven consecutive games in the match before finishing it off 6-0, 6-4.
Sharapova leads the head-to-head series against Kvitova 5-2, including wins in their last four consecutive meetings. Kvitova has not won a set against Sharapova in three years and will be hard-pressed to maintain her post-US Open win streak on Sunday. While a win would lift her to No. 2 in the world, Sharapova will likely have her own plan in mind.
Prediction: Maria Sharapova in Straight Sets
