World No. 1 Novak Djokovic maintained his undefeated streak at the China Open to advance himself to the quarter-final round of the tournament, where he will now meet rising star Grigor Dimitrov. This will serve as the pair’s sixth meeting on the tour, with Djokovic leading the head to head series 4-1.
Top seed Novak Djokovic defeated Canada’s Vasek Pospisil in the second round in Beijing to move his undefeated record at the China Open to 21-0. Djokovic maintained command of the contest from the start as he lost only six points on his first serve and converted four break point opportunities to close out the match 6-3, 7-5.
“You work all your life and you dream about becoming the No. 1 in the world, the best in what you do,” Djokovic said. “It’s definitely always the highest priority out there along with winning Grand Slam titles.”
Djokovic is in search for his fifth title in Beijing and still has to contend with a draw that still features the likes of Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Marin Cilic.
“That gives me plenty of motivation. It would mean a lot to me,” added Djokovic. “That’s why I’m out here in Beijing and Shanghai, competing and trying to get that year-end No. 1.”
His opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, defeated Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-4 to set up the entertaining clash on Friday afternoon. While the Bulgarian star is aware that he is about to face an opponent undefeated at that particular event, he is excited to meet the challenge head on.
“[Novak] has always played well here. At the same time I like my chances. I’ve been practising well. I had a good block before the last bit of the season. In a way I’m excited to just come out there and play that match. Of course… I’m going to give my all.”
This marks the sixth time that these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Djokovic leading the series 4-1. Dimitorv’s sole victory took place last season in Madrid, yet he has since been unable to pick up another upset over the world No. 1.
