Following an entertaining, albeit predictable, opening day of action at the WTA Finals in Singapore, the second day of action will feature a pair of enthralling match-ups, starting with a rematch of the US Open fourth round encounter between Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki. The Russian superstar holds a slight edge in the head-to-head series (5-3) yet will be out to avenge her loss to the Dane at Flushing Meadows. Check out the Sharapova vs Wozniacki head to head matches.
Following her fourth round exit from the US Open, Sharapova suffered a shocking second round loss to Timea Bacsinszky in Wuhan before rebounding with a strong week in Beijing en route to the title. She defeated the luikes of Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanovic and Petra Kvitova to lift the title.
Sharapova now has four WTA titles in 2014, including her second French Open title. She is two titles behind Serena Williams (6), who leads the pack for the most championship wins in 2014. Sharapova also moved from No. 4 to No. 2 in the rankings, where she currently sits.
Caroline Wozniacki comes into the WTA Finals with a trajectory that is inversely correlated to that of Sharapova. After reaching the final of the US Open, a campaign hat included wins over Andrea Petkovic, Sharapova and Sara Errani, Wozniacki followed up with another runner-up appearance in Tokyo (lost to Ivanovic) before losing in the Wuhan semi-finals to Eugenie Bouchard. She would loss even more momentum in Beijing, where she lost her tournament opener to Samantha Stosur.
This marks the ninth time that the two competitors will meet on the professional tour, and arguably one of their most important encounters to date. Sharapova held three consecutive wins over Wozniacki until she was ousted at this year’s US Open tournament. With the hard court encounters split at 3-3, this will certainly be the match to focus with on Tuesday.
Prediction: Maria Sharapova in Three Sets
