An intriguing second round contest is scheduled to take place on Wednesday afternoon at the If Stockholm Open. Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and Teymuraz Gabashvili will meet for the second time on the ATP World Tour. Their first meeting took place over three years ago, with the Russian taking the victory and the lead in the head-to-head series.
Since losing in the fourth round of the US Open, Dimitrov has taken part in two tournaments on the Asian Swing. He reached the quarter-final round in Beijing, where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic, and then in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters, where he lost to France’s Julien Benneteau. With a spot in the Barclays World Tour Finals on the line, Dimitrov will be keen to step up his game this week in Stockholm.
Dimitrov’s first opponent in Stockholm will be Russia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili, who reached the second round of the tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alejandro Falla. Gabashvili struck 3 aces, won 78% of his firsts service points, 80% of second serve return points, and converted on 6 of 9 break point opportunities. The world NO. 59 completed the victory in a total of 70 minutes.
This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Gabashvili leading the series 1-0 with a victory three years ago on clay in Houston. Much has changed during that period, as the Bulgarian has moved from being a potential prospect to a bonafide Top 10 competitor. Dimitrov will likely avenge his loss from three years ago.
Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov in Three Sets
