The Bulgarian opened up his title defense in Stockholm with a tight straight sets victory over Russia Teymuraz Gabashvili. Dimitrov struck 8 aces, converted on all three break point opportunities he had, and won 65% of his first service points to secure the 7-5, 7-6(4) win in 1 hour and 53 minutes.
His next opponent will be Jack Sock, whom he has never previously encountered on the professional tour. The American reached the quarter-final round with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over France’s Jeremy Chardy. Using his aggressive gameplay, Sock struck 14 aces, and converted his only break point opportunity to close out the contest in 1 hour and 19 minutes.
“I had to play my game, be the aggressor,” said Sock. “We both kind of play similar, looking for forehands and looking to dictate. I was able to squeak out a few points in the tie-break, which helped a lot, and I rode the momentum in the second.”
This marks the first time that Dimitrov and Sock will meet on the ATP World Tour and could make for an intriguing and exciting encounter between two of the ATP’s future stars.
“Obviously he’s been playing some pretty unbelievable tennis since winning here last year,” said the Nebraska native. “He’s jumped up the rankings pretty high, so I’ll have to play my best to win. It’ll take a full match from start to finish of my A-game. Hopefully I can bring it and it will be the first of many battles.”
Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov in Three Sets
