For the fourth consecutive time this season, Ana Ivanovic and Sabine Lisicki will cross paths on the WTA tour. It is an impressive, yet surprising achievement, since the two athletes had never encountered each other on the professional tour prior to their first meeting midway through the season in Stuttgart. Ivanovic leads the head-to-head series 2-1 and will look to extend that lead further en route to the quarter-final round in Beijing.

After winning the title in Tokyo two weeks back, Ana Ivanovic bowed out in the opening round in Wuhan via retirement to allow herself recovery ahead of the China Open – a tournament that represents a final chance to garner significant ranking points for the WTA finals in Sigapore. The Serb appeared charged and ready for the week ahead, as she kicked off her campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 win over WTA Rising Star Belinda Bencic and followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Italy’s Romina Oprandi.
“Every year is different and every match is different,” said Ivanovic. “We have seen in the past there is so many good players out there, they can beat anyone. My goal will be to get further than quarterfinals. But, you know, still I want to take it one match at a time, enjoy. Conditions are very different past few weeks, so it takes some adjustment. I’m really enjoying my time here so I hope I can stay around for a little bit.”
Her upcoming opponent, Sabine Lisicki picked up a big win in her second round match against Eugenie Bouchard, as she dispatched the Canadian 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round of the tournament. It was an inspired performance from the German, who has now placed Bouchard in a tough position to qualify for Singapore.
While Lisicki is a force to be reckoned with on grass, Ivanovic held the advantage in the pair’s first hard court meeting. In terms of consistency, the Serbian No. 2 has taken part in one of her best seasons as a professional and will look to excel ahead of the year-end championships in Singapore.
