Romanian breakthrough star Simona Halep became the third person to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore. The world No. 2 comes in behind Grand Slam winners Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
The top-ranked Romanian achieved some of her best performances this year when she reached the quarter-final of the Australian Open, the final of the French open and the semi-final round of the Wimbledon Championships. She also won two titles this season at Doha and Bucharest.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to compete in the WTA Finals,” Halep said. “I’ve had great success this year, and I’m looking forward to competing against the best players in the world in Singapore.”
Halep is now officially the most accomplished Romanian female tennis player to date, surpassing former NOo 7 Irina Spirlea.
“Simona Halep’s ascent over the last couple of years has been incredible, and she has become one of the elite players in the game,” WTA Chairman & CEO Stacey Allaster said. “As the countdown to Singapore continues, the Asian swing is an exciting time on the Road To Singapore as the picture becomes more clear about who will be competing on the ultimate stage for women’s tennis.”
