WILLIAMS Serena

While she did not have the most ideal of starts at the China Open, Serena Williams overcame her first round opponent to set up a second round match-up against Tsvetana Pironkova. This marks the third time that these two competitors will meet on the WTA tour, with Williams leading the series 2-0.

Following her bizarre retirement in Wuhan, where she lost to Alize Cornet after being unable to resume the match at 6-5 up in the opening set, Serena Williams rebounded with a good showing in her Beijing opener against qualifier Sílvia Soler-Espinosa. After working her way through a tough opening set, Williams maintained the momentum in the second frame to close out the match 7-5, 6-2 in 1 hour and 13 minutes.

“It was really exciting to come away with the win today. I got off to a slow start, but I just really, really wanted to win and get some matches under my belt, so it was good,” Williams said.

And regarding her viral illness last week:

“I’m really good now. I mean, every day I’ve been getting better, so I feel so much better now.”

The world No. 1’s next opponent is Tsvetana Pironkova, who defeated Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-1 to set up the encounter with Williams.

This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Williams holding an undefeated 2-0 record. This will serve as their first hard court meeting, after their first two matches took place on clay and grass respectively. Although they have not crossed paths in over 3 years, Williams should have little trouble advancing to the next stage of the tournament.

Prediction: Serena Williams in Straight Sets

  1. Pironkova may lose but she will go down swinging, unless Williams begins stumbling around in La La Land. Maybe laying off the PED’s would help Serena? Ya think? Oh no, i forgot the WTA can’t have any negative publicity, nor people throwing ridiculous racism accusations at them.

    • izak_walz  There is nothing to prove or even suggest that Serena uses PEDs or steroids.
The truth is that if she were to have been doping to the extent they suggest for as long as people are suggesting then she’d likely have had a heart attack by now.

    • izak_walz ?!? What are you talking about? You must have the Naturally great, hard-working Serena confused with Eastern European woman tennis pro, Sesil Karantantcheva who was BANNED from tennis for Years for PED use. The irony for stupid racists ignorantly Trying to point fingers at the Clean, Naturally hard-working Williams Sisters? Sesil Karantantcheva, PED cheat, while Juiced to the GILLS, “beat” a Clean, Naturally hard-working Williams Sister whose Official ranking Unfairly Fell as a result!

Moreover, UNLIKE PED Cheat, Karantantcheva, Clea, Naturally hard-working Serena Williams took the Maximum number of rigorous drug tests Allowed just Last Year – one of her most dominant years on tour- Ever- and passed them all because she is NOT on PED’s!

In addition, Venus and Serena believe the human body is a temple. They would be the Last people on tour to take that poison just for a mere “sports advantage.”

  2. What bizarre about her retirement.Tennis writers are pathetic. She is 33 years ols, playing and dominating and whopping izak’s substandard, inferior6’3 women who looklike pasty teenage bo with very broad shoulders. y. And shame on Karim, one wouldn’t think he’d need to be lectured on first impressions, look at your seat tv mates the next time  you board a Western based plane airline.  Serena is 33, her schedule is unrelenting,  and both the so called writer knows that fact.

    • @lovetns , Lovetns, Other tennis players in Wuhan ALSO withdrew from matches because of having contracted viral illnesses. Strange that no alleged  “journalist” called THEIR withdrawals “bizarre.”  A bug was going around. Nothing “bizarre” about that!

  3. ?!? Other tennis players in Wuhan withdrew because of that same virus! Were THEIR retirements from matches “bizarre” too, or is that insulting language “reserved” just for the great and the African-American Serena Williams!
