Although she had already cemented her spot in the year-end finals with her semi-final win over Ekaterina Makarova on Friday, world No. 1 Serena Williams went on to emphasize her spot at the top of the list when she won the US Open title on Saturday afternoon.
“The WTA Finals is the ultimate goal of the season and I am excited to be back for another year and defending my title,” Williams said.”I am looking forward to going to Singapore and competing against the best players in the world.”
Williams will be making her ninth career appearance at the WTA Finals, having won it four times, in 2001 and in her last three tries in 2009, 2012 and 2013. Her four titles at the WTA’s crown jewel event trail only Martina Navratilova’s eight titles and Steffi Graf’s five, and tie her with Chris Evert’s four.
“Serena Williams has established herself as one of the greatest players all time,” Stacey Allaster, Chairman & CEO of the WTA, said. “Reaching her 22nd career Grand Slam singles final is a fantastic achievement and she has certainly earned the right to compete at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, where she is sure to be a fan favorite. Her success at the WTA Finals is an incredible testament to her ability, and we can’t wait to see her at this year’s event.”
The WTA Finals take place in Singapore in October.
