An intriguing first-time encounter between top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller is scheduled to take place in the second round of the Moselle Open in Metz.
The French No. 1 is coming off a historic weekend at the Davis Cup, where he helped lead his team to the finals for the first time since 2010. He achieved that with a win in the singles rubber as well as the doubles rubber on Saturday.
Prior to that during the US Open Series, Tsonga defeated a gauntlet of opponents including world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Grigor Dimitrov and Roger Federer to win his first Masters 1000 final in over two years. Sadly, the Frenchman was unable to maintain that momentum in Cincinnati, as he appeared flat in his opening round match-up against Mikhail Youzhny and lost that encounter in disappointing fashion. He would reach the fourth round of the US Open but would fall to a rejuvenated Andy Murray in straight sets.
Gilles Muller stopped a potential all-French second round encounter when he defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-1, 7-6(6) to reach the second round of the tournament. Muller hit a remarkable 18 aces and won 81% of his first service points, and even saved al four break points he faced on serve.
While this marks their first meeting on the ATP World Tour, Tsonga and Muller have met on two separate occasions on the Challenger circuit, both of which Muller won. They have not met since 2007 and it is unlikely that Muller will be able to dominate their encounters in a similar fashion this time around.
Prediction: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Three Sets
