Serbia will play with a debilitated team this coming weekend in Davis Cup playoff tie against India, as world No. 1 Novak Djokovic officially withdrew from the event citing fatigue.
Serbia captain Bogdan Obradovic revealed that Djokovic wanted to rest his body and spend time with his pregnant wife Jelena.
“I spoke to Djokovic last night and he said he will not come to India,” Obradovic said. “The main reason for this being fatigue.”
This is a significant blow to the Serbian team, as they have already been forced to play without former Top 20 player Janko Tipsarevic. They will likely to include the reserve player Ilija Bozoljac, as well as Dusan Lajovic, Filip Krajinovic, ranked 108th, and the doubles specialist Nenad Zimonjic.
The Indian Davis Cup team with feature Somdev Devvarman (144) and Yuki Bhambri (153) for the singles competition while the doubles specialist Leander Paes is likely to team up with Rohan Bopanna.
The Serbia-India tie is scheduled to take place between Sep. 12-14 and will determine who will move into the World Group next season.
