2013 runner-up Victoria Azarenka overcame a shaky start to roll into the third round of the US Open, where she will now meet Elena Vesnina for the sixth time on the professional tour. The Russian is yet to topple her Belarusian rival, as Azarenka leads the head-to-head series 5-0.
Following a surprisingly slow start early in the match, Victoria Azarenka rebounded in dominant fashion to win twelve of the last fourteen games for a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Christina McHale. The former world No. 1 won 80% of her first serves and 23 winners to secure the victory in 96 minutes.
“I think she started really well,” Azarenka said after the match. “I felt like I was a little bit, you know, watching too much and not aggressive enough. But she really picked her targets and went for her shots. It took me a little bit of time to get into the rhythm. And, you know, conditions weren’t really easy.
“I think also I needed a little bit of a moment to adjust. But in the next match I’ve got to be able to do that earlier. But I’m glad I was able to turn things around and I stayed in the moment and really was working my way through and trying to find the rhythm and trying to find the game that I was playing. When things turned around, I really felt like I stepped it up and kept my composure.”
Elena Vesnina reached the third round with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Marina Erakovic. She won 57% of her first service points and hit 23 winners to secure the win in 2 hours and 27 minutes.
This marks the sixth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Azarenka leading the series with a 5-0 record. Barring any unexpected circumstances, Azarenka should find herself in the fourth round in New York following the match.
