An intriguing match-up between Victoria Azarenka and Christina McHale is scheduled to take place in the second round of the 2014 US Open. With the head-to-head series tied at 1-1, this will serve as the rubber match between the two competitors.

While it looked as though she may be n a significant amount of trouble after dropping the first set to Misaki Doi, Victoria Azarenka was able to rally back and snatch the next two sets to keep her US Open campaign intact. The two-time finalist struck 10 aces, 36 winners and won 69% of her first service points.

“I think she played really well, you know. She served really well and took the opportunities on the service games. I felt like I had some chances, but I didn’t really commit well enough. You know, she really went for it. So the second set was all about try to stay with her and try to create more opportunities. I felt like I started to be more aggressive. So, yeah, I think that switch of just staying out there and keep fighting, it was important today.”’

Christina McHale defeated South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 in a thrilling encounter on Court 4. The American struck 3 aces and won 69% of her first service points to secure the victory in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

This marks the third time that these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with the series tied at 1-1. McHale’s win took place over four years ago on clay, while Azarenka’s win came in the form of a double bagel in Doha last season. While the Belarusian is more than capable of losing this encounter, she should be able to overcome the sly American en route to the third round of the event.

Prediction: Victoria Azarenka in Three Sets
