In one of her strongest performances since arriving in New York, 2013 runner-up Azarenka routed Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-1 in just 57 minutes to set up her fourth round meeting with the youngster. The match was clearly one-way traffic, as Azarenka went up a break quickly in each set and only dropped two games to close out the match in less than an hour of court time.

“I think it was a good progression today,” Azarenka said. “I want to keep thinking my best is still to come. I stayed aggressive and played well in the important moments.”

Aleksandra Krunic, the No. 145-ranked qualifier, who had never defeated a member of the Top 50 in her career, played some inspired tennis to topple reigining Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets.. Following a close 41-minute opening set, which the youngster won 6-4, she jumped to a 4-2 lead before being broken back by Kvitova. She would deny the Czech a comeback and broke one last time to finish out the match 6-4, 6-4.

“No, honestly,” she told the press. “Also, against Madison. I mean, you know, when you are playing the smaller tournaments all the time, I honestly didn’t know what to expect from myself at all. You know, I don’t know my limits. Today I think I pushed myself to my total limits.

“Even I know that it was not Petra’s best day and she missed a lot. I don’t know if I made her miss with my game or not. But still, you know, if she would have played her best tennis I don’t think the outcome would be the same, as I said. But I tried to keep the tactics that I have been given. Yeah, that was my only chance. Honestly, no, I didn’t expect it at all, for sure.”

This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Azarenka likely to be the favourite for this contest but it will be tough to determine the victor until both ladies step out on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday afternoon.

Prediction: Victoria Azarenka in Three Sets
