Former world No. 1 and US Open champion Venus Williams is finally back in the third round of the season’s final Grand Slam event, where she will now go up against Italian no. 1 Sara Errani for a spot in the fourth round. This marks the fourth time these two competitors meet on the professional tour and the second time in a Grand Slam tournament. Williams is undefeated with a 3-0 head to head record in the series.
Thirteenth seed Sara Errani secured her spot in the third round of the tournament with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Anastasia Rodionova. She hit 90% of her first serves in and 19 winners to close out the contest in 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Venus Williams dominated in her second round match against Timea Bacsinszky in the evening session on Arthur Ashe Stadium. She hit just one ace but made up for it with 20 winners and 74% of her first service points. She also won 9 of 10 net points to pick up the 6-1, 6-4 win in 85 minute.
“I feel like I’m playing well. I feel like I play my best when my opponent pushes me really. Once we start to, you know, really start to get into a slugfest, I feel like I really relax. Sometimes I feel like when they aren’t pushing me as much maybe I’m a little too passive at times. I don’t know. But I do feel like, you know, when things get tight, I feel like I can rely on myself to compete really well. So that’s a good feeling.”
This will mark the fourth time that Williams and Errani will meet on the professional tour and it appears the Italian is yet to figure out a strategy to defeat the American. This will prove to be the case once again, as Williams is playing far better than she was during any of their previous encounters.
Prediction: Venus Williams in Three Sets
