Following straight set wins in their respective first round match-ups, Stan Wawrinka and Thomaz Bellucci will compete for a spot in the third round of the United States Open on Wednesday afternoon. This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Bellucci leading the head to head 1-0 with a win back in 2009.
The third seed reached the second round in New York following a 6-2, 7-6(6), 7-6(3) win over Czech prospect Jiri Vesely on Monday afternoon. While it was not his most comfortable of performances, Wawrinka managed to hit 9 aces, 41 winners and convert on four of his eight break point opportunities to close out the match in two hours and 14 minutes.
Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci secured his spot in the second round of the US Open with a 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-1 victory over France’s Nicolas Mahut. He struck 11 aces and won 81% of his first service points to secure the win in 2 hours and 4 minutes.
While Bellucci holds the lead over Wawrinka in the head-to-head series, the victory came over five years ago on clay. This match will take place under far different circumstances and in entirely contrasting conditions. Wawrinka has since moved himself into the Top 4 in the world rankings and even won his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this season. He should manage the victory over the Brazilian in straight sets but may need four to close out the match.
Prediction: Stan Wawrinka in Four Sets
