A meeting between Stan Wawrinka and Blaz Kavcic is scheduled to take place in the third round of the United States Open on Saturday. This marks the second time these two competitors cross paths on the professional tour, with Wawrinka leading the head-to-head series 1-0 with a three-set victory last season on clay.
While he looked to be cruising to a straight sets victory, Swiss No. 2 Stan Wawrinka suffered a slight stumble in the third set and was forced to fight hard to close out the match in four sets instead of five against Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci. Wawrinka struck 16 aces, won 85% of his first service points as well as 51 winners to close out the match 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1) in 2 hours and 36 minutes.
“It was comfortable because I was playing really good tennis. I think I was serving big. I was moving really well and taking the ball early, dictating every point. That’s why it look like not easy, but it look good for me. I had one bad game, change my focus. I start to focus on what he was doing, not on what I was doing. It make difference. He start to play better. I drop a little bit my level and that change completely the match.”
Wawrinka’s upcoming opponent, Blaz, Kavcic needed no extra sets to secure entry into the third round of the US Open. He upset 30th seed Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 7-6(6), 6-3 in 2 hours and 22 minutes, and hit 8 aces and 27 winners in the process.
This marks the second time that these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Wawrinka leading the series 1-0. The Swiss’ win took place on clay last season in Casablanca, which is far different than their US Open encounter will be. Wawrinka has been prone to mid-match malfunctions and could be in for another one in his third round match.
Prediction: Stan Wawrinka in Four Sets
