Romania’s Simona Halep will begin her final tune-up event for the US Open on Tuesday afternoon when she meets Magdalena Rybarikova in the second round of the Connecticut Open. This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with the previous wins split between them. Check out the Halep vs Rybarikova Head to Head.
Following her trips to the final of the French Open and the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships, which all served the purpose of propelling her further up the ranks, Halep transitioned onto hard courts, where she defeated Kirsten Flipkens and Lucie Safarova before losing to Maria Sharapova in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Halep’s surge through the rankings has taken her all the way to world No. 2, where she will now replace Li Na after the Chinese No. 1 was forced to withdraw from the entire US Open series due to a knee injury. She will be looking to make a deep run at the event to fully prepare herself for the fortnight ahead in Flushing Meadows.
Rybarikova snapped a two-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the opening round of the Connecticut Open in New Haven. Magdalena hit 5 aces, won 72% of her first set points and saved four of five break points she saved to earn the victory in 1 hour and 26 minutes.
Having split their previous two encounters, this will serve as the rubber match between Halep and Rybarikova. The Slovakian earned the first win in 2011 while Halep leveled the series in Moscow last season. Considering her remarkable year, the Romanian will certainly be a heavy favourite for this match-up and should have no trouble reaching the quarter-final round.
Prediction: Simona Halep in Straight Sets
