World No. 1 Serena Williams maintained her title defense campaign at the US Open with a strong showing on Thursday afternoon, and has now earned a third round encounter against yet another American in Varvara Lepchenko. This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and the second time so far this season. Williams maintains an unblemished 2-0 record in the head-to-head series.
Serena Williams extended her winning streak at the US Open to 16 consecutive matches on Thursday when she defeated Vania King in just 56 minutes of court time. The American followed up on her strong showing against Taylor Townsend with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over King.
“I’ve been working really hard,” Williams said. “The results just hadn’t been coming in the Slams. I started to have some really good results this summer, and that’s given me a lot of confidence going into this last Grand Slam of the year.”
Her fellow American, Varvara Lepchenko defeated Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-0 to reach the third round of the US Open. She will now be hard pressed to defeat a player whom she has only previously managed to win three games against.
This is the third time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Williams leading the series 2-0. Their first encounter taking place over a year ago in Brisbane, which the top ranked American won 6-2, 6-1 to reach the second round of the event. Their second meeting took place earlier this season in Rome, which Williams also won in dominant fashion. It is highly unlikely that Lepchenko can make the third time her charm.
