Top seed Serena Williams has had a fantastic tune-up during the US Open Series and will now look to culminate her summer with a first Grand Slam title this season in Flushing Meadows. She has been served an interesting first round opponent in Taylor Townsend, whom she has never encountered previously on the professional tour.
Williams won the Bank of the West Classic title in Stanford, the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and reached the semifinal at the Rogers Cup in Montreal to put herself in a prime position to win the $4 million payout for winning the Emirates US Open Series. She will have to begin her run in New York with a interesting generational battle against the much younger Taylor Townsend.
American youngster Taylor Townsend followed up on her first round loss at the Wimbledon Championships with second round showings in both Washington and Cincinnati. Her losses came to Kristina Mladenovic and Flavia Pennetta.
This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and will certainly make for a compelling match-up that will be offered a feature spot on the day’s schedule.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion is yet to win her first Major title in 2014, after having fallen short at all three previous tournaments so far this season. While she is having a great summer leading up to the US Open, she had also won titles in Brisbane ahead of the Australian Open and in Rome ahead of the French Open and that did not do much to help her go further in the draw. It will be interesting to see if she manages to sort out those issues this time around.
