Serena Williams vs Stosur Serena Williams vs Samantha Stosur Preview – WTA Montreal 2014 Round 2

Fresh off her title victory at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, world No. 1 Serena Williams has arrived in Montreal and is prepared to continue her campaign through the US Open Series. He first opponent this week at the Rogers Cup is top-ranked Australian Samantha Stosur, whom she has played on nine separate occasions. The Williams vs Stosur Head-to-Head stands at 6-3.

Following her bizarre retirement from doubles competition at the Wimbledon Championships, top seed Serena Williams began her North American hard court swing with the necessary momentum shift. The American comfortably worked her way through the Stanford draw this week until she encountered an inspired Ana Ivanovic in the quarter-final round, where she needed to summon up all her inner fortitude to rally from a set down and beat Ivanovic 7-5 in the deciding set. While her turnaround for the semi-final was less than 20 hours, she had a much easier contest against Andrea Petkovic, whom she defeated 7-5, 6-0.

“Definitely was excited to get that win under my belt, but that was already last week, so now I’m moving on to this week,” she said. “The summer tournaments, I’m trying to do my best, not in the tournaments but in each match more than anything, just try to improve with each match,”

Unlike Williams, Monica Puig and Samantha Stosur had to contest an opening round match to determine who would go through to the second round of the tournament. The Australian cruised through the opening set comfortably for a 6-2 lead and quickly broke for a 4-2 lead in the second set at the 60-minute mark exactly. Four minutes later, Stosur held serve and broke a second time to close out the match with an identical 6-2 in the second set.

This is the tenth time that Williams and Stosur will compete on the WTA tour, with Williams leading the head-to-head series 6-3. While they are 1-1 on clay, Williams is 5-2 on hard court matches and has not lost to Stosur since the 2011 US Open final. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, this should be a relatively straightforward match for Williams.

Prediction: Serena Williams in Straight Sets

Perpetuating the hate: Serena had a virus & her competitive nature took over her common sense & she tried to play through it: probably an inner ear virus, quite common, which directly affects one's equilibrium. THe 'bizarre label is just more disguised shade thrown at her. If she hadn't tried to play, people like you would've written that she was really a poor sport about losing in singles, & just made up being sick. It's all disguised racism, in my book.
