Top seed Serena Williams opened up her campaign in the Montreal draw on Wednesday afternoon with a quick victory to set up a third round encounter against Lucie Safarova. This marks the fourth time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Williams undefeated in the head-to-head series 6-0, including a win at the Rogers Cup in 2009.
The world No. 1 comfortably cruised into the third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, as she dropped only two games in her victory over Australia’s Samantha Stosur. Williams hit 10 aces, won 90% of her firsts service points and faced no break points on serve. The win puts increases Williams’ lead in the head-to-head series to 7-3.
“It feels great to be here,” Williams said in French. “I thought I played well tonight. She’s won a Grand Slam title and she’s a really good player, so it was important for me to play well.
Her opponent, Lucie Safarova also played a straightforward contest on Wednesday afternoon in Montreal, as she defeated Magdalena Rybarikova 6-4, 6-2 to set up the third round showdown with Williams. Safarova hit 5 aces, won 89% of her first service points and saved the only break point she faced in the entire contest. It was a strong showing overall from the 15th seed and she will be looking to replicate it against a much tougher opponent on Thursday.
This marks the seventh time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour with Williams holding an unblemished 6-0 record against Safarova. This marks their first meeting since the 2013 Charleston Open but that will likely not keep Williams from continuing her romp through the Montreal draw.
