World No. 1 Serena Williams has managed to survive the seeds exodus that has knocked out 5 of the top 8 seeds in the tournament and will now face Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in the fourth round of the United States Open on Monday afternoon. Williams is 3-0 against Kanepi but has not faced her in almost five years, which should add to the intrigue behind this match. Check out the Williams vs Kanepi Head to Head matches here.

Serena Williams dispatched her third straight American in three rounds so far in New York and will finally face a competitor from the other side of the pond in Kaia Kanepi. Following wins over Taylor Townsend and Vania King, Williams overcame Fed Cup teammate Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-3 to reach the fourth round in Flushing Meadows. Compared to her previous two matches this week, Lepchenko was easily the most competitive affair.
Even Williams knew that to be the case:
“I had to make some adjustments, but my coach gave me some excellent advice on playing in the wind, so I think I was able to play a lot better than the other day,” Williams said. “My opponent today was spectacular. It was a really tough match and it just shows how far Varvara has come – I’m really proud of her.
“She really raised her game to an unbelievable level and I just tried to hang in there. I tried to remember what I needed to do and what I should do.”
In one of the more surprising results of the day, Kaia Kanepi upset No.15 seed Carla Suárez Navarro, 7-5, 6-0 to set up her encounter with Williams. The win comes on the heels of her earlier victory over former champion Samantha Stosur. She will look to keep the upsets rolling as she comes up against the top seed in the final 16.
Williams leads the head-to-head series 3-0 but the two have not met in almost five years on the tour. Williams holds two wins on hard courts and is 6-0 in sets against Kanepi. That does not bode well for the Estonian’s chances.
