The 2014 New Haven final will feature an entertaining, albeit surprising, match-up between second seed Petra Kvitova and Magdalena Rybarikova. This marks the sixth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with the Czech No. 1 leading the series 4-1. Their most recent encounter took place over 3 years ago in Prague.
World No. 4 Petra Kvitova reached the final in Connecticut with a dominant showing against Australia’s Sam Stosur in the semi-final round of the tournament. She defeated Stosur 6-3, 6-1 to set up the final against the Slovakian. It was a remarkable showing from the recent Wimbledon champion, as she struck 11 aces, 26 winners and won 75% of her first service point.
“I saw her (Stosur) match against Serena in Cincinnati – it was very tough and very close – so I knew she was playing well,” Kvitova said. “I don’t really look at the numbers but I knew I had to play well today. I just tried to play as beautiful a match as I could, and I’m happy I could play well against her tonight.”
After toppling the top seed Simona Halep in a staggering upset, Magdalena Rybarikova managed to further her outstanding achievements this week with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Italy’s Camila Giorgi in the semi-final round in New Haven.
Apart from holding a 4-1 lead in the head-to-head series, Kvitova is far more experienced in WTA finals, as she is taking part in her 12 final on the tour and has only lost two of them. While Rybarikova’s run this week has been worth noting, it is unlikely she will topple the red-hot Kvitova in the Saturday final.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova in Straight Sets
