Canada’s Milos Raonic will begin his US Open campaign against Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel, whom he has never encountered previously on the circuit.
The Canadian may not have succeeded in a deep run in Toronto, where he lost in the quarter-final round to Feliciano Lopez, but he managed to improve upon that with a semi-final showing in Cincinnati, where he lost to eventual champion Roger Federer. Combine those points with his title win at the Citi Open in Washington, DC and he is officially the winner of the US Open Series Bonus and will compete for a $4mill payout at the US Open this year.
“It is very exciting to win the Emirates Airline US Open Series Bonus Challenge before heading into the US Open. To be a North American winning it is a huge honour for me since one of my results came in my hometown of Toronto. It’s a great place to be and now I’m setting my sights on having a great tournament next week in New York. It’s been a lot of hard work to get to this point and I’m looking to keep improving my results at the Open.”
Taro Daniel worked his way through the qualifying rounds of the US Open over the past week, earning victories over Andrey Kuznetsov, Toni Androic and Peter Polansky.
Considering Raonic’s impressive rise through the ranks and his consistency throughout the year including at Major championships, this should be a fairly straightforward encounter between the two and should end in a straight sets victory for Raonic.
Prediction: Milos Raonic in Staight Sets
