Marin Cilic

One of the more intriguing first round match- ups at the US Open is between entertaining competitors Marin Cilic and Marcos Baghdatis. The top-ranked Croatian leads the head-to-head series 4-1 and only lost to the Cypriot at the Cincinnati Masters in 2010.

Cilic has had a decent run in the US Open Series, as he reached the third round in the Rogers Cup and the Western & Southern Open, losing to Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka respectively. He has compiled a 6-3 record since the Wimbledon championships and is a likely threat to many players in the draw. His wins on hard court this summer were against tough competitors like Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco, as well as the top ranked Arab, Malek Jaziri.

Marcos Baghdatis is having a sort of resurgence this summer and has followed up on his surprisingly strong grass court season with two consecutive title wins on the Challenger circuit over the past few weeks. He is undefeated on summer hard court tournaments, having won titles in Vancouver and Aptos to give himself a 10-match win streak heading into the open. He will still be faced with a tall task if he is to defeat Marin Cilic in the tournament opener.

This marks the sixth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Cilic leading the series 4-1. The Croat won their last two meetings at Wimbledon (2013) and Toronto (2012) to give himself a healthy margin in the series and will look to maintain that en route to the second round in Flushing Meadows.

Prediction: Marin Cilic in Four Sets
