A first-time encounter between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Pablo Carreno Busta is scheduled to take place in the third round of the United States Open on Saturday afternoon.
Ninth seed Tsonga secured his spot in the third round in New York with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Aleksandr Nedovyesov. The Frenchman struck 13 aces, won 85% of his first service points and also hit 38 winners to earn the win in 1 hour and 47 minutes.
“I felt good on the court. I moved pretty well. I served well. You know, it’s good for the next match. Yeah, I mean, I’m in good shape.”
His opponent, Pablo Carreno Busta had a slightly more difficult route to the third round at Flushing Meadows, as he defeated France’s Benoit Paire 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. He withstood 14 aces, won 73% of his first service points and hit 34 winners.
“I know he’s Spanish, so I know he’s gonna fight until the end anyway. Yeah, I know he likes to play with his forehand like most of the Spanish guys. Yeah, he’s a newcomer, so he wants to win. He wants to improve. That’s why I expect, you know, a tough match.”
This is just the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, and will likely be a contest that heavily favours the Frenchman.
Prediction: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Straight Sets
