A fifth meeting between French No. 1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Argentine Juan Monaco is scheduled to take place in the opening round of the US Open 2014. Tsonga leads the head-to-head series 4-0 and will be looking to redeem his disappointing showing in Cincinnati with a dominant start to his fortnight in New York.
Tsonga defeated a gauntlet of opponents including world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov before reaching his first Masters 1000 final in over two years. Tsonga’s route to the Toronto title would only get more difficult, as he faced 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, where he served won over 90% of his first service points, hit 11 aces and did not face a single break point en route to his 7-5, 7-6 win over the world No. 3.
Sadly, the Frenchman was unable to maintain that momentum in Cincinnati, as he appeared flat in his opening round match-up against Mikhail Youzhny and lost that encounter in disappointing fashion.
Argentina’s Juan Monaco is yet to play a hard court match this summer. He is coming off a runner-up performance in Gstaad and a semi-final lost to Dominic Thiem in Kitzbuhel.
This marks the fifth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Tsonga leading the head-to-head series with an unblemished 4-0 record. While it is their fifth meeting overall, it is just their second hard court encounter and their first on that particular surface in over five years. It should be an interesting encounter, if only to see if Tsonga is capable of overcoming that slight hiccup in Cincinnati.
Prediction: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Straight Sets
