Arguably one of the hottest commodities in tennis this summer, David Goffin, will attempt to extend his remarkable winning streak on Thursday afternoon at the Winston-Salem Open when he meets big-serving Pole Jerzy Janowicz for the first time on the ATP World Tour.
The Belgian youngster is coming off three consecutive title wins on the ATP Challenger circuit and extended that extraordinary streak when he returned to the ATP World Tour a few weeks ago in Kitzbuhel, where he defeated the likes of Kenny de Schepper, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Paolo Lorenzi, Maxiomo Gonzalez and Dominic Thiem to win the title. He furthered his extraordinary achievements this summer when he arrived in Winston-Salem and reached the quarter-final round with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Jarkko Nieminen.
“It was a tough match today against Jarkko,” he said. “It was a great fight and I’m really happy the way I played at the end to win this match.
“Of course after 25 matches you have a lot of confidence, you don’t think you’re going to lose, but I play every match like it’s the first one in the tournament, like it’s the first one of the season and I give everything. And with my confidence I keep winning, so I’m very happy.”
World No. 52 Jerzy Janowicz reached the quarter-final round of the tournament with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Janowicz struck 5 aces, won 71% of his first service points and converted on 3 of his 4 break point opportunities to secure the victory in 2 hours and eight minutes.
This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and could make for an extraordinarily compelling match-up. Goffin is swelling with confidence from his recent success, but Janowicz will certainly be his toughest challenge yet this summer.
Prediction: David Goffin in Three Sets
