Although the 104th-ranked Sam Growth has turned out to be a worthy opponent in the match versus second seed Roger Federer, he was hardly ever in a position to undermine the Swiss Maestro’s plan of capturing the eighteenth Grand Slam trophy at the end of the US Open 2014. FedEx had everything under control in the opener where he broke in the seventh game before serving out the set by holding to love. The 26-year-old Australian showed quality to neutralize an early break in the set two, but Roger stepped up again when it mattered the most to reestablish the lead and grab the second set as well. The third one was the most entertaining with the favorite suffering a loss of serve in the sixth game and lifting the level of play once more to dominate the rest of the clash for a confident 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 triumph. Next up for the recent Cincinnati conqueror is Spain’s Marcel Granollers who prevailed in a five-set marathon against 25th-seeded Croat Ivo Karlovic. Federer is leading the head-to-head record 11-1.
Sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych was forced to dig deep to overcome Martin Klizan in the second round encounter which could really have gone either way. The unseeded Slovak pegged back twice after falling a set behind, yet he had another hill to climb when his Czech rival consolidated a break to go 4-1 up in the decider. Klizan was hoping for another comeback, but was wasteful with the chances and allowed the favorite to put the match to bed after almost four hours of tennis. The 2012 Flushing Meadows semi-finalist won 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to set up a last 32 meeting with the 62nd-ranked Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili.
Richard Gasquet, seed number twelve, had an easier day at the office against Paolo Lorenzi of Italy whom he eliminated in straight sets. The Frenchman was only seriously tested in the opener where he needed to endure a tie-break battle before moving one nil ahead. The World no. 78 Italian failed to convert on the single break point chance he had produced in the latter two sets, whilst Gasquet broke on three occasions to secure a smooth 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-3 victory. He will face 20th-seeded countryman Gael Monfils in the third round of the American Grand Slam event.
