Canadian No. 1 Eugenie Bouchard made a winning start to her 2014 US Open campaign and will now face Sorana Cirstea for a spot in the third round of the tournament. She has never encountered the Romanian athlete on the tour prior to this upcoming second round match-up.
Bouchard began her US Open run with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Olga Govortsova of Belarus. It was a dominant performance following the midway point of the first set, where the Canadian converted on a break point opportunity and cruised to the victory in 59 minutes.
“I’m happy. Definitely never easy in the first round of a Grand Slam, so happy to get a win under my belt. I want to kind of get on a roll and keep the momentum going.”
Following her less than stellar performances in Montreal, Cincinnati and New Haven, Bouchard is relieved to be feeling healthy this week at Flushing Meadows.
“I’m definitely feeling healthier than I have the past few weeks. For about a week now I have been playing pretty good with my knees and hamstring, so I’m happy with that. I took a lot of time off for these injuries, so I think, you know, I feel good on the court. Just maybe not as much practice or matches have gone into it that I wanted. It’s like give and take that you have to do for the body, but I’m feeling good now. So I’m happy, and I just want to play more matches.”
World No. 80 Sorana Ciresta upset British No. 1 Heather Watson in the opening round in New York to set up her second round match-up against the Canadian. Following her first upset tis tournament, she will be motivated to produce another staggering blow to another commonwealth athlete.
This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Bouchard likely a significant favourite over her lower ranked opponent. While the Canadian has struggled significantly this summer following her amazing grass court run at the All England Club, she appears to be in form and confident this week in New York.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard in Straight Sets
