Canadian Eugenie Bouchard will look to put her flat US Open Series behind her heading into the final Grand Slam of the season when she begins her fortnight in New York with an opening round match-up against Olga Govortsova. Bouchard has encountered her Belarusian opponent just once before on the WTA Tour: the 2012 Citi Open, which Bouchard won in three sets to give herself a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head series.
After her remarkable run to the Wimbledon final, Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard has been unable to pick up a win on the tour. Her losing stint including opening round loses in her hometown of Montreal as well as in Cincinnati last week. The first loss was a surprising 6-0 2-6 6-0 loss to American qualifier Shelby Rogers, while the other was also a three-set loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Following her loss at the Western & Southern Open, Bouchard gathered herself up and headed towards New Haven, where she was able to snap her losing streak in the opening round against Bojana Jovanovski before losing to Samantha Stosur in the second round of the tournament.
While her summer hard court season has not looked to great so far, Bouchard has proven that her consistency shines through when it is most needed – at Grand Slam events. She has reached the semi-final (or better) of all three other Major Championships so far this season and will be looking for another strong run in new York, no matter her recent struggles.
Olga Govortsova is yet to play a single main draw hard court match-up since losing her Wimbledon opener to Silvia Soler-Espinosa. Since then, she is 1-1 in qualifying round matches during the US Open Series, with a win over Grace Min and a loss to Francesca Shiavone.
This marks the second time that these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Bouchard leading the series with a victory over the Belarusian at the 2012 Citi Open in Washington, DC. Barring any more surprising performances from Bocuhard, she should be able to dominate this encounter en route to the second round of the tournament.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard in Straight Sets
