It has been a rough couple of weeks for Eugenie Bouchard but the Canadian darling is back in action on Monday afternoon at the Connecticut Open. Still in search for her first hard court win in the US Open Series, Bouchard will begin her campaign against Bojana Jovanovski, which is far from an ideal start for the shaky Canadian. Jovanovski leads the head-to-head series 1-0 and will certainly have momentum in her favour when they meet on Monday.
Following her remarkable run to the Wimbledon final, Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard has been unable to pick up a win on the tour. Her losing stint including opening round loses in her hometown of Montreal as well as in Cincinnati last week. The first loss was a surprising 6-0 2-6 6-0 loss to American qualifier Shelby Rogers, while the other was also a three-set loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova.
After her loss at the Western & Southern Open, Bouchard revealed that her priority is to maximize court time ahead of the US Open.
“You know, I feel like maybe it’s good to get some bad stuff out before the Open if there has to be. And I knew that, you know, it would be kind of a bit maybe ugly the first few steps I take kind of trying to get back to where I was. Yeah, so it’s just kind of another step in the road. You know, I hope things will go better from here.
“I’m playing New Haven next week, so the plan is, yeah, to just get ready for that and hopefully get some matches in before the Open. That’s been the goal this summer.”
Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski has had a fine summer so far in 2014, starting with a run to the final of the hard court tournament in Baku before reaching the quarter-final in Washington. She would hit a rough patch shorty afterwards, similar to Bouchard, where she would lose her next two matches in Montreal and Cincinnati.
This is another tough match-up for Bouchard, who is in desperate need of a strong win to build up her confidence ahead of the US Open. Jovanovski has had far more hard court practice heading into this match and also holds the head-to-head advantage, which may give her the mental edge over Bouchard. While this match is primed for the upset, I have a feeling Bouchard will finally get a grasp of her game and pick up her first win of the US Open Series.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard in Three Sets
