Following their respective three-set battles on Thursday evening, Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova will meet for a spot in the fourth round of the United States Open on Saturday. This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Bouchard leading the head-to-head series 2-0.

Following a quick opening round match at Flushing Meadows against Govortsova, seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard was forced to dig deep to defeat Romania’s Sorana Cirestea in three sets in the final match on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday. She appeared to be crusiing to a straight sets victory before Cirstea rebounded to snatch the second set in a tiebreak. Bouchard eventually closed out the contest 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4.

According to the WTA, Bouchard’s win on Thursday marks her 18th Grand Slam match win this season, which is more than any other player so far this year.

Barbora Zahlavova Strycova also faced a Romanian challenge of her own on Court 7, as she defeated Monica Niculescu 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to secure her entry into the third round of the US Open. She hit 6 aces, won 65% of her first service points and converted on 9 of 14 break point opportunities.

Of their two previous encounters, Bouchard is yet to drop more than a set against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, which gives her a 2-0 lead in the series. While the Canadian has struggled to find her footing this summer, she proved to be a resilient force on Thursday when she boosted her level of play late in the match to secure the victory. If she can replicate that effort against Zahlavova Strycova, then she should advance to her first ever US Open fourth round.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard in Three Sets
