An intriguing first round match-up between Andrea Petkovic and Dominika Cibulkova is set to round the Monday schedule at the Connecticut Open. This is the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with the Cibulkova vs Petkovic Head to Head tied at 1-1. This is also their second meeting at this event, the first of which Cibulkova won in 2012.
Following a strong start to her 2014 season, world No. 12 Dominika Cibulkova had less than expected runs on both clay, as she went 2-3 on the red dirt before moving onto grass, where she also only won two matches. So far, her US Open series has not been much better, as Cibulkova lost in the opening round in Stanford, the second round in Montreal and the opening round in Cincinnati to put her at 1-3 heading into the final tune-up event ahead of the US Open.
After winning her second title of the season in Bad Gastien, Germany’s Andrea Petkovic made a strong start to her US Open Series in Stanford, where she defeated youngster Naomi Osaka and Venus Williams before losing to the current No. 1 Serena Williams in the semi-final round of the tournament. She was forced to withdraw from Montreal and then lost her opening match in Cincinnati to Sloane Stephens, which brings her to Monday showdown against Petkovic in Connecticut.
This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with the series tied at 1-1. The rubber match is their second contest of the year after Petkovic defeated Cibulkova in the Fed Cup Tie en route to Germany’s 3-1 win over Slovakia. Based on their recent performances, momentum favours Petkovic as she looks to get back to her winning ways ahead of the US Open.
Prediction: Andrea Petkovic in Three Sets
