Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and German No. 2 Andrea Petkovic will meet for a spot in the fourth round of the 2014 United States Open on Friday afternoon. This is the fourth time that the two talented competitors will cross paths on the professional tour and the second time at this particular Major. Wozniacki leads the head to head series 2-1.
The 10th seed reached the third round in Flushing Meadows with relative ease – apart from a hair braid incident – as she defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour and 21 minutes. The Dane hit 10 winners and converted all three of the break point opportunities to secure the victory.
“Yeah, it’s nice,” Wozniacki said regarding her win. “Obviously we have a day off tomorrow. I think we can get some rest. But, you know, I’m happy to be through in straight sets. It’s nice to go through in two. She wasn’t an easy opponent. She’s young and hungry. She didn’t have anything to lose, so she was going for her shots. I’m just happy to be through.”
18th seed Andrea Petkovic advanced to the third round of the US Open with a come-from-behind victory over Monica Puig. The German competitor struck 3 aces, 22 winners and converted on 6 of 11 break point opportunities to secure the 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) win in 2 hours and 26 minutes.
Of their three previous encounters, Wozniacki leads the series against Petkovic 2-1, including a win at the US Open in 2011. She won their last two consecutive meeting but they have not met in three years since their last clash in the quarter-final round in Flushing Meadows. Of all the third round matches taking plalce on Friday, this one is easily the hardest to pick a clear winner. Either altheles is capable of cashing in on the opportunity and it will be interesting to see if the 18th seed can upset the 10th seed.
Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki in Three Sets
