An intriguing first round match-up between Serbian star Ana Ivanovic and American Alison Riske is scheduled to take place on Tuesday afternoon at the United States Open. This is just the second time they meet on the professional tour, with their first meeting also taking place at the start of the season in Auckland. Ivanovic leads the head to head series 1-0.
In keeping with what has been her best season on the tour since 2008, Ana Ivanovic went 2-2 in Stanford and Montreal before rebounding with a remarkable showing in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. She defeated the likes of Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elina Svitolina and Maria Sharapova before losing to Serena Williams in the final. Her performance at the event put her at No. 9 in the WTA rankings, her best ranking since May 2009 and also gave her a No. 8 seeding at the event, her highest since the 2009 French Open.
It should be noted, though, that Ivanovic has historically struggled at the US Open and is yet to go past the quarter-final round of the season’s final Grand Slam event.
“It’s been a good summer for me so far,” said Ana. “Cincinnati was a very good tournament for me and I feel like I’m on the right path. Unfortunately the U.S. Open has always been the most difficult Grand Slam for me, but I hope to change that this year.”
Before arriving in New York this week for the Open, Riske upset world No. 13 Flavia Pennetta en route to the quarter-final round of the Connecticut Open – her best showing at an event this season.
This is just the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, although they were quite close to meeting at last year’s US Open had they won their respective fourth round encounters. Instead, they will meet for the second time at the 2014 event in what should be an entertaining encounter.
Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in Three Sets
