One of the more compelling first round match-ups in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati will take place on Monday afternoon between French No. 1 Alize Cornet and surging American Madison Keys. While they have never met on the regular portion of the WTA tour, Keys did beat Cornet in their Fed Cup tie earlier in the year, which gives her a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head series.
French No. 1 Alize Cornet snapped a three-match losing streak in Montreal when she defeated Lauren Davis in the opening round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal. While she would take former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka to three sets, she was unable to finish the job and ultimately surrendered the match. She is now 1-2 since the start of the US Open series and she will be looking to improve upon that this week in Cincinnati.
Top teenager on the tour is in a similar position as her French counterpart. After losing her opener in Washington, Keys arrived in Montreal where she defeated Kuznetsova in her opener before losing to Sabine Lisicki in the second round of the tournament. She is also 1-2 in the hard court season and will be looking to rebound with a big win against Cornet.
This is just the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, the first of which also took place in 2014. Keys leads the series 1-0 with a victory over the French native in the Fed Cup tie earlier in the season. The American has the powerful game that can consistently put Cornet in trouble, which makes her the favourite in this Monday match-up.
Prediction: Madison Keys in Three Sets
