In one of the biggest upsets of Day 2 at the United States Open, 15-year-old Catherine ‘Cici’ Bellis produced a staggering upset over Dominika Cibulkova to cement her spot in the second round of the tournament.
After winning the USTA Girsl’ 18s National Championships, Bellis was granted a wildcard into the US Open and has certainly made the best of her opportunity in New York.
“I went into the match thinking it was going to be such a great experience, but I never thought I would come out on top winning.” Bellis said in her post-match interview.
Not only did Bellis claim the spot of the youngest Grand Slam main draw contestant since Alize Cornet in 2005, she became the youngest player to win a match at the season’s final Grand Slam event since Anna Kournikova in 1996.
“I’m feeling amazing. I’m still speechless. I’m still in shock about that match. I went in thinking I was going to play as well as I could possibly play. I obviously played pretty well. So I’m really happy.”
Bellis will play Kazakhstani Zarina Diyas in the second round.
