A highly intriguing third round match-up is scheduled to take place on Thursday evening, as Czech No. 1 Tomas Berdych and Canada’s Vasek Pospisil cross paths for the second time on the professional tour. Their first meeting was a particularly memorable contest for Pospisil, who upset Berdych in the third round of the Rogers Cup en route to his remarkable semi-final run at the tournament. The young Canadian leads the head-to-head series 1-0.
The top seed cruised into the third round of the Citi Open on Wednesday afternoon when he defeated American veteran Robby Ginepri in straight sets. The Czech No. 1 rushed through the opening set 6-1 in less than half an hour and quickly broke to start the second set. He faced little resistance from Ginepri, who was unable to withstand his opponent’s big serves and lost the second set 6-4.
“I felt good on the court. My goal was to be focused, especially after having a few weeks off,” said Berdych. “I’m happy to be back on the hard courts. This is my favourite surface and suits my game the most.”
Pospisil also have a relatively comfortable route to the third round in Washington, as he defeated Rajeev Ram 6-0, 7-6(8) to set up his second ever encounter with the former Wimbledon finalist. The Canadian struck 3 aces and converted three break points against the American qualifier to close out the contest in 1 hour and 38 minutes.
This is the second time that these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Pospisil leading the series 1-0 after picking up the staggering win over Berdych as a wildcard in Montreal. While he has been plagued with an array of injuries so far this season, the Canadian could be primed to pick up another big win against Berdych.
Prediction: Tomas Berdych in Three Sets
